The Future of Electric Cars: More Nissan Leafs and Less Planes

When it comes to technology and cars, my interest always “sparks up” when thinking about the future of electric cars.  I have written articles about these humming automobiles before, and I’m sure that I’ll write at least a few more as time goes on.  Why?  Because the future of electric cars so is so incredibly uncertain and difficult to predict.  It’s really going to be interesting to see what happens as companies do more and more research about how to put these rolling batteries into the hands of consumers.

It’s hard to replace something that works just fine isn’t it?  That’s why consumers are quite content driving around their cars powered by gasoline.  Consumers are even more content with gasoline powered cars due to the improvement of gas mileage.  Look at Ford’s eco-boost cars.  In April of 2011, 40% of the demand of F-150′s were for its eco-boost alternative. And this is what industries making electric cars are going up against: Providing an alternative to something that has already been effective for nearly one hundred years (Exploding gas in car engines)!  However, with gas prices launching into the stratosphere, the idea of driving around a big battery is becoming more and more appealing.  How long is it going to take before the majority of us jump off of the gasoline train?

According to a piece done by BBC, the average cost of an electric car is nearly $10,000 more than it’s gasoline powered equivalent!  Talk about a deterrent to switching to a lightning mobile!  As much as any of us would like to “zap” to work, it just doesn’t seem reason enough to make the electric conversion.  But what about the future?  BBC reports that Nissan sold more than 21,000 leafs (Their electric model) last year.  That wouldn’t be such a bad figure but since we’re talking world-wide, not so impressive… According to a recent article by the Foundry, as of February 12, consumers are now getting a $10,000 tax credit for buying electric cars.  It’s not like we’re 15 trillion dollars in debt!  It is reported that our Commander in Chief wants to see one million electric cars on the road by 2015.  That doesn’t seem that likely considering Nissan sold 8,000 leafs last year.  Only 992,000 more to go in the next three years!  Is this a fruitless endeavor?  Maybe if we sell our F-22 technology and keep all F-35′s out of the skies, I think that the production of electric cars  would fare a better chance.  Editor’s opinion:  I’d take a raptor over a leaf any day.  What do you guys think?
