Would it surprise you to know that there is one easy thing that you can do to stay safe on the roads AND increase your gas mileage by 10%? All you got to do is keep you tire pressure at its proper level. Easy as that! It is estimated that 1 in 20 crashes is directly linked to under-inflated tires. The good news is that keeping your tire pressure at optimum levels cost about 75 cents and can be accomplished in less than five minutes. Pretty much every gas station has a heavy-duty air pump that can fill your tires with some fresh air. You don’t have to run over a bucket of nails to cause your tires to lose pressure. Air tends to naturally escape at a slow rate. Things like kissin’ the curb and running over potholes/big bumps can cause pressure depletion in your tires. The simple remedy to this is to be sure to check your tires at least once a month. When you hit those curbs and holes, make sure you check your tires as well. Go to your local auto store, buy a simple tire pressure gauge and you can avoid a potentially tragic accident. I mean that alone should get you out of your seat right now to go buy one! They cost less than $3. Filling up your tires doesn’t require any sort of automotive mastery.
Step 1) Go to a gas station and pull up close to the tire pump.
Step 2) Look at the side of your tires for the recommended psi (Pressure per square inch). It is typically around 32 psi.
Step 3) Turn on the pump and fill up each tire until you reach the ideal pressure. DO NOT OVER INFLATE!
Conversely, over inflating your tires can lead to balding and uneven wear and tear on your tire treads. Tires were designed to hold a very specific amount of air and it is your responsibility to ensure that this air pressure is maintained. Like I said, it will save you some money at the pump and keep you safe while you drive!
